Walker died at his home in Draper Utah on July 8, 2013, at the age of 51. Walker’s latest album, Straight Jacket Vacation, produced by Walker and Weston Hodges, released through AOR Heaven in August 2013. Nevertheless, was again released in 2012 on Dive Bomb Records. The CD was released on Empire Records in Europe and Japan, and reached the top-40 national sales charts in Scandinavia. David Prater produced four songs from the CD, the rest was produced by Walker or co-written and produced by Jonathan Cain. Walker’s first solo record, Nevertheless, released in 1994, launching his solo career in Europe. The Alias CD earned platinum sales throughout the world, and the song “Waiting for Love” received a BMI Award for top radio airplay that year. In 1991, Walker co-wrote the song “Waiting for Love” for the band Alias on EMI Capitol Records, and it went on to become Walker’s first top-10 international hit. At the age of 21, he moved to Los Angeles, California, where he worked as a songwriter and collaborated with a number of artists and songwriters, including Survivor, Nick Gilder, Jonathan Cain (Journey), Russ Ballard, Carl Dixon and Alias featuring Freddy Curci. Walker was involved in music publishing on TV and film. At times so laid back it falls over, this is a fine Summer album that certainly does its job as a testament to a great songwriter.Brett Walker (Novem– July 8, 2013) was an American songwriter, musician, and record producer. The fact he is no longer with us is not even remotely a factor in my recommending ‘Straight Jacket Vacation’ as one of the better West Coast styled albums I’ve heard in recent years. It’s not all perfect, as a couple more upbeat songs would have given the album a kick up the arse, but overall it’s exceedingly pleasant.īrett Walker is a name that probably won’t mean much to a lot of you, and didn’t to me when I was asked to review the album. His voice is first class, and thankfully the album is mixed perfectly by Weston Hodges. Walker doesn’t step up a gear very often, although ‘I’m Gonna Fly’ gives the listener a shot of adrenalin a few tracks from the end. There’s a cover of ‘Waiting For Love’, and it still sounds great, even if this version is less powerful than the original. ‘Straight Jacket Vacation’ is a very laid back album, full of West Coast style rock tunes that mix acoustic and electric guitar in a way that Bon Jovi never quite manages to. Although his career veered much more towards songwriter than singer, this album proves that given the right twist of fate he could have certainly done some damage to the charts. Then again, you can still put the CD on, close your eyes and smell that ocean breeze…īrett Walker is perhaps best known (by me, anyway) for co writing the immensely good Alias single ‘Waiting For Love’. Yep, this sadly posthumous release from the American singer/songwriter is a bit of a summer soundtrack that couldn’t have come at a better time, unless when you get to read this the weather has turned shit again. This is not going to happen, I have to say, but when I listen to ‘Straight Jacket Vacation’ and close my eyes it’s almost like being there. A fine Summer album that certainly does its job as a testament to a great songwriter.Īs I write this, it’s hot the sort of hot that makes you want to jump into a hot sports car with a sexy Californian blonde by your side and drive with the top down to the beach.
